She is also a Schwinn-certified spin class teacher and won the 2023 Dunkin’ Donuts Butter PeContest that earned her a year of free coffee. She spent most of her pre-Lifehacker career covering media and politics for outlets like Us Weekly, CNN, The Daily Dot, Mashable, Glamour, and xvlust InStyle. Steppin works by forcing you to trade real-life activity for access to your most distracting apps.
(If you ask me, a daily reset is for true self-improvement sickos and choosing to never reset it is the cheap way out. Weekly is the way to go!) When you use Steppin, you can trade your steps for minutes on your blocked apps at any time. I started using Steppin five months ago so I could write a review, but I ended up enjoying it so much that I’m now on a 158-day streak. Some folks even just delete their problem apps during the work day so they can at least concentrate on productivity during business hours. That gets tricky, of course, because accidents and emergencies do pop up, and you may want 24/7 instantaneous access to your phone.
I’ve even thought about adding Poshmark, where I spend so much time, but I decided against that because I earn money on Poshmark, so it’s already meeting the requirement of “doing something for myself,” which Steppin forces other apps to meet by making me walk around. Those are the two that suck up the majority of time I consider wasted in my average day, although I love them both so (so) much. Steppin doesn’t pre-identify social media, games, or any app, let alone block them for you. When I read the rundown, I assumed the app would work by locking up all my other apps until I hit a certain amount of steps every day, which made me nervous.

- There are tons of apps out there you can download to help curb your social media addiction.

- The study found that underage users saw three times more restricted content featuring nudity, 1.7 times more violent material, and 4.1 times more bullying-related posts than users over 30.
- Would that mean I couldn’t look at Instagram at all on a day where I didn’t hit my step goal?
- I’ve used app-blockers that actually gray apps out completely during preset times, making them inaccessible unless I override or deactivate the blocker entirely, which defeats the purpose of having a blocker in the first place.
I already work out a lot, as I’m a spin teacher and dedicated Peloton user, so before Steppin, I didn’t pay too much attention to my step count, though I knew there was still a health value in raising it. To test it out for the first few days, I only added two apps—Instagram and a game called Project Makeover—to my block list. Would that mean I couldn’t look at Instagram at all on a day where I didn’t hit my step goal?
Even when actively searching for similar material or following creators known for posting it, those platforms did not automatically push such videos to the test accounts. As soon as these accounts were created, the platform started recommending videos featuring suggestive dancing or close-up shots of women’s bodies. Users have reported that their Instagram feeds are filled with violent and NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content.
In Alpha Daddy Make Me Yours movie, Wolfless Omega Lyra has always been called the unwanted runt. Company surveys found that teenagers on the platform reported experiencing bullying, violent content, and unwanted nudity more frequently than older users. This is not the first time Instagram has come under scrutiny for its content moderation. A third added, “I’ve seen 20+ gun shots, 5 gang fights, 13 fatal accidents, a guy crushed by elephant and a child birth as well on my instagram feed today.” My insta feed and reels keep showing sensitive contents.
You’re encouraged to get your steps in and you can still enjoy the fun apps—in moderation. Enter Steppin, a completely free iPhone app that, like plenty of others, blocks access to distracting apps. None of that is particularly good for me, and watching it over and over stops me from getting things done in my real life, though I do really love those marshmallow videos. I love to be productive, I love to exercise, but I also love (or at least find myself) getting sucked into marathon Reels-bingeing sessions on Instagram.
I’m starting to realize that I have a pretty serious social media addiction on my phone. Right now, it’s a scrolling selector, meaning you scroll to a number of minutes between one and 30, but for a brief period a few weeks ago, the app offered up pre-determined values of two minutes or five minutes. I’d opt for five minutes of unblocked time, see that deduction from my bank, open Instagram, and… Basically, even though I end each week with plenty of minutes built up in my bank, I’ve still actively elected not to spend as much time on my blocked apps. I don’t need to play Project Makeover for longer than 10 minutes and having to set a time limit forces me to think about that.

I already get plenty of steps in on a daily basis, but this has certainly encouraged me to do more. Feedback and actual user data determine a lot about what happens to Steppin, so for now, I’m using it every day to do my part. But Steppin could include a lot more than just new versions, functionality tweaks, or streaks over time. I’d have to open Steppin again, trade another five minutes in, and ultimately “spend” 10 minutes just to redeem five. He explained that he came up with the idea while on vacation with his family, noticing that no one was looking at their phones while they walked around, but as soon as they got into a car to travel to a farther destination, everyone was glued to their screens.
